Bob Barnard’s Career, What was his profession?

He performed in Sydney in 1957 with a tiny band fronted by guitarist Ray Price. Back in Melbourne, he continued to play as a semi-pro, occasionally recording with a band fronted by his brother, such as The Naked Dance. Barnard later joined Bell’s band after Bell called him in 1957 with a job offer in Sydney that did not materialize. This led to a tour of his native nation, as well as trips to New Zealand and Papua New Guinea with pop artist Frank Ifield.

Armstrong visited Australia in 1963, and Bell’s band received him at the airport, where Barnard had a brief encounter with his idol. Barnard founded his first band in 1971 for an EMI Records session, which resulted in 16 Jazz Greats, and he formed his second band three years later. The band performed in and around Sydney before heading to the United States in 1976 to at the Bix Beiderbecke Festival in Davenport, Iowa, where they were a tremendous hit. The band’s reputation had diminished slightly after ten years, and this, combined with the of a crucial member, trombonist John Costelloe, prompted Barnard to reduce the band to a foursome.

Barnard in USA, UK

Barnard traveled widely in the 1980s and 1990s, performing in the United States, the United Kingdom, Southeast Asia, and numerous European countries. He has recorded records with Ruby Braff, Peanuts Hucko, Bob Wilber, Kenny Davern, Dick Carey, and Milt Hinton, among many others. He and his brother, Len, also released two excellent albums under Ralph Sutton’s name for Sackville Records, Partners In Crime and Easy Street.

Barnard’s recording and performance groups ranged from quartets to nine- and ten-piece bands, and he has even recorded with strings. Barnard worked on an album about Australian composers in the mid-1990s, which was partially supported by the Australian Council for the Arts. With a drop in interest in traditional jazz in his birthplace, Barnard planned to spend more time in Europe and the United States by the end of the 1990s.

Barnard’s playing is distinguished by his large, rich tone and the fluidity with which he executes his solo lines. Although his name was formed and his popularity spread due to his powerful playing in the conventional jazz style, this was far from the extent of his enormous talent. This appears to be reflected in his lyrical mainstream ballad playing, which pays homage to the guitarists he admires, such as Bobby Hackett, Braff, and, of course, Armstrong. Barnard has also written a number of songs, including “Black Stump Stomp,” “Smackarooney,” and “Rainbow Hill,” an ballad he recorded during a visit to New York in 1995.
