Extrasolar Planets

The first planet in orbit around a distant star, was discovered in 1995. Since then more than 300 extrasolar planets have been discovered. Most of these are large gas planets, comparable in size with Jupiter. But advances in technology have improved our ability to resolve smaller planets, and there has been a drastic reduction in the size of extrasolar planets, from Jupiter-sized to about five times the size of Earth.
